Philadelphia Block Parties

Philadelphia Block PartiesFrom Memorial Day to Labor Day, Philadelphia neighborhoods clean and clear their streets to make room for grills, canopies and garden chairs. Ropes, caution tape, cars and chairs installed at both ends of a city block become barriers against thru traffic. Large speakers blast music from the morning to accompany the party set up and the grilling. The children on their bikes and scooters take advantage of their safety zone and celebrate their temporary playground. For one day of the summer, the residents of a neighborhood block stop the rhythms of the city to gather and feast and play.

Please let me know if you are planning a block party.

I’d love to come and photograph it!
